post-concert recap:
First and foremost let me announce that I’m starting to not dislike my body so much. This makes me happier, which perpetuates the whole thing… yay!
Other point being- the March concert’s over! We’re not performing again until early May. The rundown in brief:
String Sinfonietta:
Holberg suite/ Grieg.
(Generally) in tune and shiny. Could have used more time, but it went well, the pacing was okay, no one clapped in between the movements, everyone clapped afterward, no one stood. Not mindblowing, not awful. A solid performance all ’round.
Chamber Choir:
Something with a Hebraic title- what’d I do to my program?/ Cohen
Miracles/ Vigeland
A setting of some Neruda poems/ Frisch
Maybe it’s that you’re generally talented singers, maybe it’s your (awesome) direction, but Chamber was great. Three cheers for student/ parent/ alum composition.
Girls’ Ensemble: I’m really sorry. I don’t like Emily Dickinson, even set to music. You performed it well, but the composer and the poet turn me off. Good job, and I know you have no say in your repertoire, so all is forgiven.
Glee Club: Solid. Well pulled-off, for a group that was complaining of impending cataclysm mere days ago. I didn’t get to stay for Jabberwocky; I had to run out and tune. The rest, though- good work. The shake-up in conducting had obvious and great results.
Orchestra:
Introductions to acts I and III of La Traviata/ Verdi
Symphony no.1/ Beethoven
Oh boy. The Verdi was out of tune, but people seemed to like it decently anyway, which was good. We played with decent quantities of emotion and seemed to finally realize that someone was dying of consumption and needed to be taken gently. The Beethoven had energy (yay!) and musical problems (not so much yay). The ascending bits in the fourth movement need serious help. That aside, though, people payed attention to the conductor, which was good. And the audience seemed to love it, which was good. People stood, which was sweet. And we didn’t go all hyper stage adrenaline crazy on the second movement, which was new and exciting in and of itself.
All in all, awesome work, glorchestra! Let’s pat ourselves on the back- for once, the concert was actually a little better than I expected.
