pardon our dust
Renovations, yay! I’m loving the new theme. The default header was so rainbow-y, I decided to keep it.
I recently started Oliver Sacks’s Musicophilia.
Have I mentioned that my three favorite things are human biology, music, and books? This book is like heaven. Read it. I love Sacks’s prose… I read voraciously through Awakenings, The Island of the Colorblind, and The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat.
A friend of mine went to go hear him lecture at AMNH and said he was great. I am this envious.
Also, today is non-sequitur day.
So, Leopard.
I’m upgrading my wee little MacBook (how dearly I love thee [no, really, his name is Egdar]) to Leopard sometime this week, once it ships. I’ve gotten a shipping notification, but it’s sitting in a warehouse somewhere in California right now. Benchmarks for the nerdy: It’s an Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GHz of proc. speed, 1GB of RAM (+ a 2GB flash drive that I have plugged in nearly always). I’ve backed up my school files and my music, and I plan on doing a clean install. I want my Leopard factory-shiny, not immediately cluttered by all my aux. apps. I’ll redownload anything I really need, for now that’s looking like NeoOffice, Adium, Thunderbird, Firstclass, JavaSDK, Ruby, and Amadeus II. And, obviously, Firefox. Best browser evar.
Moral of the story? Clean installs are good. And I love Oliver Sacks. And, by the way, Jacqueline du Pre.
so I haven’t written a real post in ages
because I’ve been doing crap. However, I’m now at my kitchen table with my laptop (woo!) drinking a cup of tea (woo!).
I’m (once again) going to ref over to katzlib.wordpress.com . I author there, as do two (amazing, kickass, lovely) librarians, Ms. Starobin and Ms. Myers. Ms. Myers is the one with the bike. Pretty cool, I dare say. And they love books as much as I do.
So speaking of books, I’ve put The Tin Drum on hiatus. I spent a month getting through the first 200 pages- I really have not had any damn time. And I… well, I don’t really have the time or energy required to deal with some (admittedly amazing) ex-Nazi’s internalized quandaries.
So I’m reading the (really quite trippy) Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking-Glass.
Alice irks me, but that’s not the point.
The point is… I love y’all.
And I found a book of poetry in the library today, and it’s making me happy. Samuel Menashe.
today in the complab
someone left a volume of William Carlos Williams lying on the table
and I guess it was just one of those moments
because I cracked the spine open
and found the phrase “flowers that vomit beauty at midnight”
from Adam
and it fit everything
that I had ever learned
about horticulture.
edit: song of the day 2.0
She paints a lot of abstract art
She haggles for the cheapest price
She never orders take out food before ten o’clock at night
She’s really into snowmobiles
She owns a lot of nice flashlights
She cares for all the stupid cats that never found their way home
She shaves her legs with Ginsu knives
She quotes a lot of Annie Hall
She misplaced her virginity back in 1995
She’s whats keeping me alive
She the pizza of my eye
Without her near me I would not survive
It gets cold when she’s not around
I float until I sink and swallow
It’s get cold when she’s not around
I wait for her to come home and tell me I’ll be fine
She’s always eating Captain Crunch
She sings a lot of Ben Folds Five
She’s scared to death of cobra snakes
Just like Indiana Jones
She tells the dumbest knock-knock jokes
She drinks a lot of Chardonnay
She hates the way I comb my hair
But she never knew last June
She was the bright I was a boom
I cried a lot and then whispered
Without her in my life I would be doomed
It gets cold when she’s not around
I float until I sink and swallow
It’s get cold when she’s not around
I wait for her to come home and tell me I’ll be fine
Tell me I’ll be fine
She loves the smell of Christmas trees
She sneezes when she sees bright lights
She fainted on the kitchen floor
When her father passed away
Our baby girl introduced me
And when the little lady grows up
I hope that she’ll be just like her mother
–
this song is most definitely about me. mmhm yep.
song of the day
I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes
I want a girl with the right allocations
who is fast and thorough and sharp as a tack,
She is playing with her jewelry, she is putting up her hair
She is touring the facility
and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a
long jacket
I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass
She is fast, thorough and sharp as a tack,
She is touring the facility and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long,
long jacket
Nananananananananananananananananana
I want a girl with smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At Citi Bank we will meet accidently
We will start to talk when she borrows my pen
She wants a car with a cup holder armrest
She wants a car that will get her there
She is changing her name from Kitty to Karen
She is trading her MG for a white, Chrysler LeBaron
I want a girl with a short skirt and a
long jacket
Nananananananananananananananananana
I’m sorry it’s been so long
but I’ve had things to do.

Make room for love.
