Nor’Easter was a terrible thing.

The water here is SO DEEP and EVERYWHERE.

My basement is flooded.   We don’t have heat or hot water.  The entire county had off school today.  A state of emergency has been declared in my town.  The governor was here.  People have been evacuated and are seeking shelter in schools.  The Red Cross is here, and FEMA sent out automated phone calls to everyone.  I wonder if they’re here too…

All in all, it’s just OBSCENE and CRAZY.

It’s Passover!

And you guys know I’m not too heavy on the God thing… but I’m pulling (some admittedly Marxist) stuff from my Haggadah and posting it up here.  It actually means something, so read it.

“People can be enslaved to themselves.  When they let emotion sway them to hurt, and when they permit harmful habits to tyrannize them- they are slaves.  when laziness or cowardice keeps them from doing what they know to be right, and when ignorance blinds them to the suffering of others- they are slaves.  When envy, bitterness, and jealousy sour their joys and diminish the glow of their contentment- they are slaves, shackled by chains of their own forging.

People can be enslaved by poverty and inequality.  When the fear of need drives them to dishonesty and violence, to defending the guilty and accusing the innocent- they are slaves.  When the work people do enriches others but leaves them and their children without safe housing, warm clothes, and nourishing food- they are slaves.

People can be enslaved by intolerance.  When Jews are forced to abandon their Torah, to neglect their sacred festivals, to leave off rebuilding their ancient homeland- they are slaves.  When the poor, aged, or ailing are derided and attacked- they are slaves.  When women, men, or children live in fear of hatred and prejudice- they are slaves.

How deeply these enslavements have scarred the world!  The wars, the destruction, the suffering, the waste!  Passover calls us to be free- free from the tyranny of our own selves, free from the enslavement of poverty and inequality, free from the hate that corrodes the ties uniting the family of humankind.”
